FG responds to labour unions’ 14-day nationwide strike notice
The Ministry of Labour and Employment has responded to the 14-day nationwide strike notice issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria over government’s inability to implement the agreements reached on October 2, 2023, following the removal of fuel subsidy.
Following a Memorandum of Understanding signed on October 2, 2023, after a 16-point negotiation, expectations were high for swift action to address key issues such as fuel subsidy removal, currency devaluation, inflation, and insecurity.
However, dissatisfaction brewed among members of organised labour as deadlines approached without tangible progress. In response, labour unions declared their intention to commence a nationwide strike within 14 days, starting February 9, 2024, if their demands were not met.
Addressing reporters in Abuja, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, clarified the government’s stance.

He explained that while progress had been made on some fronts, certain agreements, like the establishment of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion centres, require more time to materialise.
Emphasizing the complexity of the process, Onyejeocha highlighted ongoing efforts by the CNG committee and assured Nigerians of the government’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations. She cautioned against hasty action, urging labour unions to consider the broader implications of shutting down the economy.
The minister revealed significant steps taken by the government, including the procurement of 11,500 CNG vehicles, buses, and tricycles, set to be unveiled by President Bola Tinubu.
Additionally, provisions have been made for 55,000 CNG conversion kits, marking the commencement of the auto gas conversion programme.
She underscored the government’s dedication to improving the welfare of Nigerians, citing plans for state-of-the-art CNG conversion centres nationwide, with the goal of converting 1 million vehicles to bi-fuel CNG/PMS, offering cost-effective alternatives to traditional petrol-based transportation.
While acknowledging the urgency of labour concerns, Onyejeocha urged patience and cooperation, reaffirming the government’s resolve to honor its commitments and enhance the nation’s economic prosperity.
