FIFA World Cup 2026 opens in grand style as Mexico, South Korea claim early victories

 

The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially commenced with excitement, drama and colourful celebrations as co-hosts Mexico and South Korea secured opening victories to kick-start the expanded 48-team tournament.

Mexico delighted home supporters with a 2-0 victory over South Africa in the tournament’s opening match at the historic Estadio Azteca. Goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez ensured a winning start for El Tri in front of a capacity crowd, setting the tone for what promises to be a memorable World Cup.

The encounter was not without controversy, as three red cards were issued during a fiercely contested match that saw South Africa finish with nine players.

In another Group A fixture, South Korea came from behind to defeat the Czech Republic 2-1. After Czech captain Ladislav Krejčí opened the scoring, South Korea mounted a spirited comeback through Hwang In-beom, who equalised before assisting substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu for the decisive goal.

The result leaves Mexico and South Korea level on three points at the top of Group A after the first round of matches.

Earlier, football fans around the world were treated to a dazzling opening ceremony at the Estadio Azteca, where global music stars Shakira and Nigeria’s Burna Boy headlined an entertainment-filled spectacle celebrating the start of the world’s biggest football tournament.

The ceremony featured performances from several international artistes and showcased the rich cultural heritage of the host nations, drawing applause from spectators both inside the stadium and across the globe.

Attention now turns to fellow co-hosts Canada and the United States, who are set to begin their campaigns on Friday. Canada will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto, while the United States take on Paraguay in Los Angeles.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the largest edition in the competition’s history, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches across host cities in Mexico, Canada and the United States. The tournament will run until July 19, when the champions will be crowned.

With thrilling football, vibrant fanfare and packed stadiums already defining the opening day, the stage appears set for a historic World Cup across North America.
