Fire razes popular market, destroys goods worth millions

Story by Victor Itodo ABUH

A midnight fire has gutted the popular Alaba Rago Market in the Ojo area of Lagos State on Wednesday, destroying goods valued at millions of naira.

Dr. Femi Oke-Osayintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed that the fire started in the early hours of the day.

“The immediate or remote cause of the fire could not be ascertained at the time of filing in this report,” he stated.

He said LASEMA responded swiftly to distress calls, activating the State’s emergency response plan and deploying its Emergency Response Team from Igando.

Upon arrival, the agency’s Dolphin Response Team found several shanty shops engulfed in flames.

“Firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, alongside LASEMA and other responders, battled to contain the inferno. Thanks to their efforts, the fire was eventually brought under control, preventing it from spreading to adjacent properties.
