Fresh Jail Break: 16 inmates escape from Keffi prison

Sixteen inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State, early on Tuesday after overpowering personnel and breaching security.

According to a statement from the Nigerian Correctional Service spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, five officers were injured during the breakout. Two of them are in serious condition and are receiving urgent medical attention at a government hospital. Seven of the escaped inmates have been recaptured, while a search for the remaining nine is ongoing.

Abubakar’s statement confirmed that “some inmates breached the security of the facility and attacked personnel on duty to compromise the situation, enabling 16 inmates to escape custody.”

Following the incident, the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, visited the facility. He has ordered a full investigation into the escape, stating that “no staff will be spared if found culpable.” He also directed an immediate, coordinated manhunt for the missing inmates, in collaboration with other security agencies.

The public has been urged to “remain calm, vigilant, and to promptly report any suspicious movements or sightings of fleeing inmates to the nearest security formation.”
