Gov Bago advocates single-term tenure for governors

Story by Susan Mbamah

Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, has called for the adoption of a single-term tenure for state governors as part of efforts to improve governance and reduce political distractions.

Bago argued that a single, longer term in office would allow governors to focus fully on service delivery and long-term development projects without the pressure of re-election campaigns. He said the current two-term system often encourages short-term policies driven by political calculations.

The governor noted that such a reform could also reduce the cost of elections and political tension associated with second-term ambitions. He urged policymakers and constitutional reform advocates to consider the proposal in the interest of national development.

Bago stressed that meaningful reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s democracy should prioritise stability, accountability, and effective leadership at all levels of government.
