Gov. Buni, Cameroonian counterpart commit to addressing common challenges of Lake Chad region

Story from Sa’adatu MAINA, Damaturu

As part of the post-insurgency recovery process, the Executive Governor of Yobe State Honourable Mai Mala Buni on Wednesday played host to the Governor of Far North Region of Cameroon and chairman, Forum of Governors of the Lake Chad Basin Region, Mr Mijinyawa Bakari, in Damaturu where both men expressed commitment to tackle insecurity among other challenges and work towards speedy development of the Lake Chad Basin region.

Speaking, Gov. Buni said, “The visit provides us with the opportunity to engage in brotherly discourse, exchange ideas, and analyse our progress and challenges as well as challenges that have bedeviled the Region for over a decade.

“The impact of the horrific Boko Haram insurgency experienced by the member states who lost many precious lives and property, displacement of our people, disruption of socio-economic activities, and destruction of infrastructure and social services is still fresh and regressive to our development efforts.”

He further said a holistic approach must be taken in order to build sustainable peace and security in the Lake Chad Basin region.

Buni commended President Muhammadu Buhari and the Cameroonian President, Mr Poul Biya, for authorising the outing.

The visit which was coloured by presentations of gifts to the dignitaries on the entourage of the Chairman of the Lake Chad Basin Governors Forum by Governor Buni was attended by top politicians and Yobe state government officials.

Earlier in his remarks, Gov. Mijiyawa Bakari said he was delighted to be in Yobe for talks on the way forward for the region.
