Gov. Buni inaugurates first phase of Solar Power Plant at Yobe Teaching Hospital

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, on Monday, commissioned the first phase of 400kw of 1-megawatts (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant at the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital in Damaturu.
The project, implemented by the Federal Ministry of Power, is part of a broader initiative to enhance energy access and sustainability in the region.
Speaking during the launching of phase one of the 400kw photovoltaic power plan of the 1-mw, Governor Buni said the federal government’s intervention will significantly enhance the quality of services at the teaching hospital by ensuring uninterrupted power supply.
Represented by his deputy, Alhaji Idi Barde Gubana, Buni revealed that it will also reduce operational costs by minimising the hospital’s reliance on diesel generators and lowering electricity bills.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ministry of power, for implementing this vital policy at the newly commissioned Senator Mamman Ali Maternal and Child Health Complex and the newly constructed isolation centre.

Earlier in his remarks, the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, represented by the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Power, Mr Mamuda Mammam, acknowledged that the project aligned with the vision of President Tinubu and demonstrates the administration’s commitment to transforming Nigeria’s energy sector under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
He explained, “This agenda seeks to build a Nigeria where access to energy is no longer a privilege but a fundamental right for all citizens regardless of their location or background.
“The solar power plant is expected to provide reliable electricity to the hospital, improving healthcare services and operational efficiency,” said the Power Minister.
In his vote of thanks, the Chief Medical Director of Yobe State University Teaching Hospital Damaturu, Dr. Baba Gana Waru stated that since the hospital’s inception seven years ago, Governor Buni has provided significant assistance, including 24/7 electricity and water supply.
He added that Yobe is one of the frontline states offering free hemodialysis to approximately 650 patients suffering from chronic kidney failure, many of whom are airlifted for treatment.
