Grain prices drop in Ngelzarma market, bringing relief to traders, consumers

In a welcome development for both consumers and grain traders, the prices of key agricultural commodities have seen a significant drop this week at the Ngelzarma Grain Market. This shift comes as a breath of fresh air for families and businesses struggling with high food costs across Yobe State and beyond.
A market survey conducted on Saturday, 21st June 2025, reveals that the prices of staple grains such as maize, millet, sorghum, and beans have fallen compared to previous weeks, rekindling hope among residents in the farming and trading communities.
According to traders, maize is now selling between ₦48,000 and ₦50,000 per bag, while millet is priced slightly higher at ₦54,000 to ₦55,000. Sorghum, a widely consumed crop in the region, is available in different varieties with the small load (locally known as Dawa Ɗan Lodi) selling for ₦41,000 to ₦42,000. The premium Kaura variety of sorghum now costs between ₦47,000 and ₦48,000.

White beans large are being sold at ₦90,000 to ₦95,000, while the large red beans range between ₦93,000 and ₦94,000 per bag.
Roselle, commonly referred to as Zobo (dried flower), now costs ₦20,000 to ₦21,000, while Melon comes in two variants, one selling between ₦44,000 and ₦45,000, and another ranging from ₦33,000 to ₦35,000.
In the rice category, polished rice is available at ₦125,000 per bag, while the price of broken or processed rice varies depending on the quality and supplier.
Groundnuts continue to command higher market value, with current prices between ₦130,000 and ₦135,000.

Malam Ibrahim Bako, a long-time grain trader in the area, described the trend as promising. “We are seeing a gradual drop in prices, and this is good for everyone—especially for families struggling to put food on the table. It gives us hope for better stability in the market.”
Farmers and buyers alike expressed gratitude for the price relief, praying for continued ease in the market and bountiful harvests in the months ahead.
