Grain prices drop significantly at Danbam LG grain market, Bauchi State

The prices zof major grains, including beans, millet, and sorghum, have recorded a noticeable decline this week at the Danbam Local Government Grain Market in Bauchi State, bringing relief to consumers and sparking mixed reactions among sellers.
According to market data gathered on November 7th, 2025, several key food staples experienced a drop in prices compared to previous weeks. Maize is now selling between ₦30,000 and ₦31,000 per bag, while new millet is going for ₦32,500 to ₦34,500. The old millet, previously much higher, now sells between ₦36,000 and ₦40,000.
Sorghum is being sold within ₦22,000 to ₦35,000, depending on quality and quantity.
For beans, both white and red types saw a reduction in price. The new white beans now cost between ₦60,000 and ₦65,000, while the large red beans are slightly higher, selling from ₦60,000 to ₦67,000.
Other commodities also followed the downward trend. Roselle flowers (used for making zobo drink) are now selling for ₦20,000 to ₦21,000, while new groundnut is priced between ₦85,000 and ₦87,000. Bambara nut maintains a fairly stable price range of ₦88,000 to ₦90,000, and processed rice has dropped to ₦22,000 to ₦25,000. However, polished rice remains relatively high at ₦95,000 per bag.

Sellers at the market attributed the drop in prices to the arrival of new harvests and reduced transportation costs. One grain seller, Malam Sani Musa, explained, “The new millet and sorghum harvest has just entered the market. Farmers brought in large quantities, and that has pushed prices down. We are selling more now, but our profit margin is smaller.”
Another trader, Hauwa Ibrahim, who deals in beans, expressed cautious optimism. “Yes, prices have dropped, and that’s good for buyers. But for us sellers, it means we have to sell more to make the same money we used to earn before. Still, we thank God, Alhamdulillah, for the good harvest this year.”
Buyers and consumers, on the other hand, welcomed the development with relief, especially given the high cost of living in recent months. A buyer, Abdullahi Yusuf, noted, “We are happy to see prices coming down. Last month, everything was too expensive. Now, at least we can buy maize and millet to feed our families without so much struggle.”
Another customer, Aisha Mohammed, who purchases grains in bulk for resale, said, “It’s been a long time since we saw such price drops. I’m buying more today because I know prices might rise again before the year ends.”
Market observers believe the decline is seasonal and linked to post-harvest supply increases. However, they warn that prices could fluctuate again in the coming months, depending on demand, storage capacity, and transportation costs.
