Grain prices fluctuate in Potiskum market amid supply, demand changes

The prices of food commodities at the Potiskum grain market have witnessed notable fluctuations, with beans experiencing a slight increase, while millet, maize, and sorghum prices have dropped.
According to market surveys conducted on Sunday, traders reported that the cost of staple grains has been affected by supply and demand dynamics, seasonal changes, and market forces.
Market analysts attribute the reduction in millet, maize, and sorghum prices to an increase in supply from recent harvests.
Neptune Prime noted that the rise in bean prices is likely due to higher demand and limited stock availability.
A grain trader, Malam Musa Haruna, noted that while the reduction in some grain prices is a relief for buyers, farmers and wholesalers are concerned about profitability. “This time of the year, we usually see price drops in cereals, but beans are becoming more expensive due to storage and transportation costs,” he said.

Similarly, food vendor Hajiya Amina Yusuf expressed concern over the fluctuating prices. “It is difficult for small-scale traders to predict costs. One day, you buy at one price; the next, it changes,” she explained.
The current market prices for key food commodities are as follows: New Millet sells for between ₦48,000 and ₦50,000, while Tobacco Seeds range from ₦20,000 to ₦23,000. Kaura Sorghum is priced between ₦47,000 and ₦50,000, and White Sorghum is sold for ₦45,000 to ₦46,000.
White Beans (Large) cost between ₦97,000 and ₦100,000, while White Beans (Small) are slightly higher, ranging from ₦97,000 to ₦101,000. Brown Beans are sold between ₦100,000 and ₦102,000.
Other grains include Wala Sorghum (Wuyo) at ₦35,000 to ₦36,000, Mixed Sesame Seeds at ₦60,000, and Gurguzu (Mixed Grain Waste) at ₦23,000.
Wedding Maize, a special variety, sells for ₦47,000, while Gangala (Gujjiya Nuts) is the highest-priced commodity at ₦160,000.
