Gunmen attack voting centre, kill councillor during Anambra governorship election

Tension gripped Owerre Ezukala Ward 1 in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State on Saturday after gunmen attacked a voting centre, killing a local councillor amid the ongoing governorship election.

Eyewitnesses reported that the councillor was shot dead around 1:30 p.m. while attempting to cast his vote. The incident sparked panic and disrupted what had been a peaceful voting exercise in the area.

A community leader, Odogwu Odemenna, described the atmosphere as chaotic, lamenting that security operatives at the scene could not prevent the attack. ā€œMy ward is in flames as we speak. The councillor of my ward was shot dead this afternoon while trying to vote,ā€ he said, adding that police and military personnel have since been deployed in pursuit of the assailants.
