How 33-year-old man killed his wife, 4 children after losing job

A 33-year-old man has been arrested by French police on suspicion of killing his wife and four children. The bodies were discovered in a flat in Meaux, situated 40km (25 miles) to the north-east of Paris, prompting an investigation.

According to Prosecutor Jean-Baptiste Bladier, the scene inside the flat was marked by “extreme violence,” with pools of blood at the scene. The victims, a woman and her four children aged between nine months and 10 years old, showed signs of a brutal attack.

The suspect, known to the police for a prior case of domestic violence, was apprehended at his father’s residence in nearby Sevran, traced through CCTV footage.

Neighbours described the mother as “nice and spoke to everybody,” while expressing concerns about the father’s apparent struggle with depression following job loss. The suspect had been “undergoing treatment” and was found to have documents suggesting a history of psychiatric admissions and a prescription for tranquilizers.

The investigation into the murders is being carried out by the Versailles judicial police service. The tragic incident in Meaux is the latest in a string of similar cases within the Paris region, underlining the need for broader societal support and mental health initiatives.
