‘I Feel perfectly safe here,’ Boris Johnson dismisses negative security reports on Nigeria
Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has dismissed negative security reports about Nigeria, declaring that he feels “perfectly safe” during his visit to Owerri, Imo State.
Johnson made the remark on Thursday while addressing participants at the Imo State Economic Summit 2025, hosted by Governor Hope Uzodimma.
He recounted reading alarming reports before his trip but said his experience in Owerri proved otherwise.

People warned me about supposed security issues in Nigeria, but I decided to come anyway. And let me ask—do you feel safe here today? Yes, we all feel safe. I feel perfectly safe. Thank you, Governor, for what you are doing,” he said.
Johnson praised Governor Uzodimma’s efforts to deliver 24-hour electricity across Imo State, noting that reliable and clean power is key to driving economic development.
“Your focus on electricity is exactly right. The future is AI, and both clean energy and AI will be colossal. I congratulate you for securing sustainable power for Imo State and Nigeria,” he added.
Highlighting the longstanding cultural and professional ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, Johnson acknowledged Nigeria’s contributions to the UK, including skilled professionals and cultural exports.
“We are grateful for what Nigeria sends us—oil, gas, Nollywood movies, brilliant doctors, nurses, technicians, and tech geniuses. We send you former UK prime ministers, and you send us future ones like Kemi Badenoch,” he joked.

Vice President Kashim Shettima represented President Bola Tinubu at the summit.
Other notable attendees included former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon; Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote; Minister of Finance Wale Edun; several state governors; and other dignitaries.
