Influx of foreign fighters reinforces terrorist attacks in N/East, N/West – DHQ
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has revealed that the resurgence of terrorist attacks in Nigeria’s North East and North West regions is linked to an influx of foreign fighters providing reinforcements to local terror groups.
Major-General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, made this disclosure during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday while updating the public on the armed forces’ operations.
Major-General Buba stated that the foreign fighters infiltrating Nigeria primarily come from the Sahelian region and are playing a critical role in strengthening local terrorists.

“The resurgence in terror attacks can be attributed to the influx of foreign fighters that come in as reinforcement for these terrorists,” he said.
He further highlighted the role of local collaborators in supporting these groups by acting as informants and reporting troop movements.
Despite these challenges, Major-General Buba reassured Nigerians that the military remains committed to its mission of eradicating terrorism. He noted that while occasional setbacks might occur, the armed forces are resolute in breaking the terrorists’ will to fight.
“Defeating an enemy means destroying or breaking his will to fight, and the military is achieving this through the cumulative effort of killing their operatives, commanders, and senior leadership,” he explained.
The military’s strategy also includes dismantling the terrorists’ logistics, administrative networks, and combat capabilities. Additionally, regional and international collaborations, along with media engagements, are being leveraged to further weaken the insurgents’ resolve.
Acknowledging the complexities of the war on terror, Major-General Buba emphasized that it is not a quick fix but a long and enduring operation.
“Wars are fought and won all over the world by destroying the enemy’s will to fight. We understand that this war is not a quick fix, but at the end of this enduring military operation, these terrorists will be destroyed, and we will have a better world,” he said.
He concluded by expressing optimism about achieving a future free of insecurity and reiterated the armed forces’ determination to bring an end to terrorism in Nigeria.
