IPI Nigeria demands end to journalist attacks amid protests
The Nigerian National Committee of the International Press Institute (IPI Nigeria) has issued a stern warning to security agencies against the continued attacks on journalists covering the #EndBadGovernance protests sweeping across the country.
In a recent statement, IPI Nigeria highlighted a troubling pattern of harassment and violence towards journalists, reminding law enforcement agencies of the constitutional duty of the press to report on public events. The committee emphasised that journalists should not be obstructed or harmed while fulfilling their roles.
“The responsibility of law enforcement agencies to maintain law and order is acknowledged,” stated Musikilu Mojeed, President of IPI Nigeria. “However, it is equally crucial for journalists to inform the public of ongoing events without fear of retribution.”
Several disturbing incidents were reported by IPI Nigeria, showcasing the severity of the situation:
– In Lagos, Benard Akede of News Central Television was harassed and interrupted by police officers during a live broadcast, preventing him and his colleagues from conducting interviews.
– In Kano, a vehicle transporting eleven journalists from Channels Television was vandalised, traumatising the passengers and resulting in the assault of Ibrahim Isah from TVC. Additionally, vehicles belonging to Premier Radio and Cool/Wazobia/Arewa FM Kano were also attacked.
– In Abuja, Yakubu Mohammed of Premium Times was brutally attacked by police officers, sustaining head injuries from gun butts and batons while covering the protests. Equipment damage was also reported, with cameras destroyed and Jide Oyekunle, a photojournalist for Daily Independent, arrested and his mobile phone seized.
Journalists have also faced teargas attacks alongside protesters, adding to the mounting list of grievances.

IPI Nigeria has called on the heads of security agencies to instruct their operatives to cease these attacks immediately. The organisation insists that all officers involved in these violations be held accountable for their actions.
“Journalists must be allowed to perform their duties without fear of violence,” said Tobi Soniyi, Legal Adviser of IPI Nigeria. “We demand thorough investigations into these incidents and appropriate protection for all media personnel.”
