Police launch investigation after body found near Iran’s World Cup training base in Tijuana

Mexican authorities have launched an investigation after a body was discovered inside the trunk of an abandoned SUV near Estadio Caliente in Tijuana, where Iran’s national football team is training ahead of its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

local authorities, the body was found wrapped in a black plastic bag and showed signs of violence. The vehicle, a grey Toyota SUV with California license plates, had reportedly been parked in a supermarket lot opposite the stadium for several days before police inspected it.

Forensic teams and investigators cordoned off the area as they examined the scene and removed the remains. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, while authorities continue efforts to determine the cause and circumstances of death.

Officials have not indicated any connection between the incident and the Iranian national team. However, the discovery has heightened security concerns around the team’s training base as the World Cup gets underway in North America.

Iran, which relocated its World Cup training camp to Tijuana, is scheduled to open its tournament campaign against New Zealand on June 15. Security around the squad has already been intensified amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and logistical challenges surrounding the tournament.
