Nigerian prisoners in Ethiopia celebrate transfer agreement, commend Tinubu
Nigerian inmates serving prison terms in Ethiopia have expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu following the signing of a Prisoner Transfer Agreement between Nigeria and Ethiopia, a move expected to pave the way for their transfer back home to serve the remainder of their sentences.

The inmates conveyed their gratitude in a video shared by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, shortly after the agreement was signed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In the footage, the prisoners were seen celebrating the development and thanking the Nigerian government for its efforts.
The agreement, signed by Nigeria’s Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), and Ethiopia’s Minister of Justice, Hanna Arayaselassie, establishes a legal framework for the transfer of convicted persons between both countries.
Under the arrangement, Nigerian citizens serving sentences in Ethiopian prisons will be eligible to complete their jail terms in Nigeria, subject to the conditions outlined in the treaty and the laws of both nations.
Officials said the deal reflects the Tinubu administration’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of Nigerians abroad while strengthening diplomatic relations with Ethiopia.
The Federal Government disclosed that more than 100 Nigerian inmates currently held in Ethiopian correctional facilities are expected to benefit from the agreement once the transfer process begins.
The development has been widely welcomed by the affected inmates and their families, many of whom have long sought intervention from Nigerian authorities over their incarceration in the East African country.

The prisoner transfer pact is also expected to facilitate rehabilitation and reintegration by allowing inmates to serve their remaining sentences closer to their families and support networks.
