Iran’s president-elect Pezeshkian to be sworn in next month

Iran’s newly elected president, Masoud Pezeshkian, is set to be sworn in before parliament in early August as the Islamic republic’s ninth president, state media reported on Sunday.

“The swearing-in ceremony of the president will be held on August 4 or 5,” stated Mojtaba Yosefi, a member of parliament’s presiding board, as quoted by the official IRNA news agency. “The president will have 15 days to present his proposed ministers to the parliament for a vote of confidence.”

Iranian presidents-elect are mandated to take an oath before parliament before they can officially assume office. This ceremony occurs after the president-elect receives an official endorsement from the Islamic republic’s supreme leader.

Masoud Pezeshkian emerged victorious in a runoff election on Friday, defeating the ultraconservative Saeed Jalili. He will be taking over from President Ebrahim Raisi, who tragically died in a helicopter crash in May.

The 69-year-old reformist secured more than 16 million votes, approximately 54 percent, with Jalili garnering over 13 million votes, around 44 percent, from the roughly 30 million votes cast. The turnout for the election was 49.8 percent, an increase from the record low of about 40 percent in the first round.

On Sunday, Iranian newspapers featured front-page photos of Pezeshkian and called for “unity” under the president-elect.
