Jimmy Carter Funeral: All 5 living presidents attend ceremony

A funeral service for former President Jimmy Carter was held at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday, marking the conclusion of a week-long series of public tributes. Carter, who passed away on December 29 at the age of 100, was honored by political leaders, family, and friends.

The service, lasting about two hours, was filled with heartfelt remembrances, celebrating both Carter’s legacy as a powerful president and his life as a compassionate man of faith.

The service served as a fitting sendoff for a man who was both a political outsider and an enduring figure in Washington. All five living U.S. presidents attended the ceremony, including President-elect Donald Trump, who was set to take office shortly after.

Carter, the nation’s longest-living president, had played a key role in planning his funeral alongside his wife, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, a process they began decades earlier. Many of their choices were intentional and deeply meaningful, from the music selection to the speakers chosen to honor him.

President Biden, a close friend and longtime colleague of Carter, delivered the eulogy—a request Carter had made in 2021. Biden reflected on Carter’s character and their nearly 50-year friendship, emphasizing Carter’s ability to look ahead to the future.

“Today, many think he was from a bygone era,” Biden remarked. “But in reality, he saw well into the future.”

Biden also spoke about the importance of rejecting hate and standing against the abuse of power, noting that striving for justice is not about perfection but about taking action with the right values. He highlighted Carter’s dedication to these principles throughout his life.

The service, part of a national day of mourning declared by President Biden, followed other memorials held at the U.S. Capitol, the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta, and Carter’s hometown of Plains, Georgia. Carter’s remains will be transported to Georgia for a private burial in Plains.

Along with Biden’s eulogy, Carter’s grandsons, Josh and Jason Carter, delivered moving tributes to their grandfather.
