Kabiru Turaki emerges as new PDP national chairman

Former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Turaki, has been elected the new National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
His victory was announced on Saturday night by former Anambra Central senator, Ben Obi, during the party’s national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Obi explained that Turaki ran unopposed after Katsina’s 2023 governorship candidate, Lado Danmarke, withdrew from the race. Despite stepping down, Danmarke still polled 275 votes from delegates, while Turaki secured 1,516 votes to clinch the chairmanship.

A total of 1,834 votes were cast, with 43 declared invalid.
“It is therefore clear from the votes cast that Taminu Turaki has won the position of National Chairman of the PDP with a total of 1,516 votes,” Obi declared.
He also announced that Solarin Sunday Adekunle was elected Deputy National Organising Secretary with 633 votes.
The positions of National Youth Leader and Deputy National Legal Adviser were stepped down, while 17 other offices were unopposed and their nominees returned elected.
Obi disclosed that 3,131 delegates participated in the convention, with 2,745 accredited.
Governors present included Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), and Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau).

Absent governors were Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), and Agbu Kefas (Taraba).
Other prominent attendees included Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro; former Osun governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola; former Gombe governor Ibrahim Dankwambo; and PDP Board of Trustees Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara.
Earlier in August, the PDP National Executive Committee zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South in line with the party’s rotation arrangement, while the national chairmanship was zoned to the North.
Ahead of the convention, powerful North-West stakeholders endorsed Turaki as their consensus candidate following a series of meetings held in October. Those present at the endorsements included governors from Bauchi, Plateau, Adamawa, and Zamfara; the then acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum; former Senate President Bukola Saraki; former Minister of Information Jerry Gana; Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro; and former Education Minister Ibrahim Shekarau.
