Kaduna Govt warns against imminent flooding, asks residents to evacuate

Story from Christine TOBECHUKWU

The Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) has issued a warning regarding an impending flood disaster that could affect seven local government areas within the state.

KADSEMA’s new Executive Secretary, Usman Mazadu, gave the warning shortly after taking over from his predecessor on Wednesday, calling on residents of flood-prone areas to temporarily relocate to safer places.

The local government areas likely to be affected by the impending flood includes Kaduna North, Kaduna South, Jema’a, Sanga, Igabi, Kagarko, and Jaba.

Mazadu gave admonishing counsel to residents, urging them to refrain from indiscriminate disposal of refuse and other waste materials into waterways and drainage systems as this could worsen the flooding menace during the upcoming rainy season.

He called on residents of the local government areas to take proactive measures and cultivate the habit of clearing gutters, drainages and water channels in their communities that could block the free flow of water to guard against flooding.

He further advised relevant agencies to perfect their emergency evacuation plans and be ready to activate them as quickly as possible.

Mazadu stated that KADSEMA is in the final stages of formulating a comprehensive action plan.

He further disclosed that the plan would serve as a strategic framework to mitigate any potential flood disasters that may unfold across various parts of Kaduna State.
