Katsina state orders closure of public schools due to security concerns

Story by Okafor Vivian

The Katsina State Government has directed the immediate closure of all public schools in the state in response to ongoing security concerns.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Yusuf Jibia, confirmed the directive on Friday during a briefing in Katsina.

Jibia explained that the closure is intended to protect students and teachers while security agencies carry out a statewide review of school safety measures.

He noted that although students are currently sitting for examinations, ensuring their safety remains the main consideration.

The commissioner said the closure is temporary and will continue until security assessments of high-risk areas are completed. Normal academic activities are expected to resume once adequate safety measures are in place.

The decision follows reports of student abductions in neighboring states, which have raised concerns among parents and authorities. Katsina State has also experienced security incidents in recent months, including attacks in August and September that resulted in several casualties.
