Kogi Central constituents begin recall process of Senator Natasha

Kogi Central Constituents have begun the process of recalling Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Recall that the Senator, who represents Kogi Central senatorial district, is a first timer at the red chamber who made headlines when the Senate slammed a six months suspension on her for gross misconduct.

However, Senator Natasha rejected her suspension and alleged that she was punished for turning down sexual advances from the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

She further alleged that her refusal earned her denial of her privileges in the Senate.

According to reports, the constituents, mostly women, gathered to sign the forms that were printed with their pictures.

A recall is a process through which a validly elected senator is removed from the senate or house of representatives in the case of National Assembly.

It is a voting process whereby the electorate vote via a referendum with a simple yes or no whether they want the senator to remain for the remainder of his term or he should be recalled.

In the case of Nigeria, the recall process is contained in section 69 of the 1999 constitution as amended.

It begins with a petition to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) who then initiates a verification process and then a referendum.

If the referendum is met, INEC then sends a certificate of recall to the senate president to effect a recall.

The constituents appended their signatures against their names across the five local governments of the state, beginning the recall process of the senator.

The embattled senator could not be reached for comments as she did not respond to inquiries. She also did not answer calls.
