Lagos driver arrested after truck crushes motorboy to death

A truck driver’s assistant lost his life in the Ogolonto area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, after being crushed while attempting to stabilise a moving truck by placing a wooden plank under its tyres.
The driver was arrested by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), who were on a 24-hour night patrol in the area, and was subsequently handed over to the police.
According to a statement released on Thursday by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, the incident occurred on Wednesday night.
Taofiq explained that preliminary investigations showed the truck had developed a brake failure. While the motorboy attempted to slow the vehicle using a wooden plank, he fell under the truck’s rear tyres and died instantly.

He said, “In a distressing and avoidable tragedy that unfolded late last night, November 12, 2025, officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority Special Night Gang Patrol Team apprehended the driver of a heavily loaded truck after he fatally crushed his motor boy at the Ogolonto Traffic Light Intersection, inward Ikorodu Roundabout.
“Preliminary findings from the joint security investigation revealed that the deceased had alighted from the moving truck to help stabilise it by placing a wooden plank beneath its tyres due to reported brake failure. During the process, he slipped and fell under the rear tyres, which ran over him and caused his immediate death.
“LASTMA officers quickly secured the scene to prevent further chaos and ensure the safety of other road users. Operatives of the Ipakodo Police Division were contacted and took over the case.”
He added that the driver was handed over to the police for further investigation, while the victim’s body was deposited at the Ikorodu General Hospital.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended condolences to the bereaved family and emphasised that the tragedy could have been prevented.
He warned that poor vehicle maintenance and mechanical negligence endanger both operators and other road users. Bakare-Oki reaffirmed the Lagos State Government’s commitment to promoting road safety, discipline, and orderliness through enforcement, public education, and collaboration with security agencies.
Reports from earlier in the week also highlighted similar fatal accidents involving trucks in Ogun State, including an incident along the Ilaro–Ibese Expressway in Yewa South Local Government Area, where a minor was killed and three others injured, and another on October 4 where five people died after a truck crushed a tricycle at the Alapoka axis of the Papalanto–Ilaro Road.
