Lagos man remanded for alleged murder of girlfriend amid cheating accusations

A security guard named Samuel Adeniyi has been remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre by a Magistrate’s Court in the Yaba area of Lagos State for allegedly killing his girlfriend, according to a report by Punch.

The 33-year-old stands accused of murder, facing a one-count charge, after reportedly using a sledgehammer to fatally strike his girlfriend in the Lekki Phase I area of the state.

The tragic incident occurred on August 10, 2023.

During the court proceedings, the police prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, revealed that Adeniyi had accused the deceased of infidelity and dissatisfaction in their sexual relationship.

The deceased, who worked as a nanny, had left a child in her care to visit another man. When she returned, Adeniyi questioned her whereabouts, leading to a heated argument that culminated in the fatal sledgehammer blow.

Upon realizing that she had collapsed, her employers rushed her to the Mainland General Hospital, where medical professionals confirmed her death.

The charge filed against Adeniyi read as follows: “That you, Samuel Adeniyi, on August 10, 2023, around 12 pm, at No. 33 Audu Ekpa Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully kill one Sarah Morolake, aged 25 years, by striking her head with a sledgehammer, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 222 and punishable under Section 233 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.”

The court decided not to take his plea, and he was remanded in custody pending legal advice from the Department of Public Prosecution.

The case has been adjourned until October 10, 2023.

The public first became aware of the crime on August 31, 2023, when the suspect was paraded at the state police headquarters.

The State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, disclosed that the suspect initially escaped after committing the crime but was eventually apprehended by vigilant officers.
