Man arrested after attempting to grope and kiss Mexico’s first female President
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum was assaulted on Wednesday by a man who attempted to grab her breasts and kiss her while she was walking through Mexico City’s historic centre, according to authorities and local media reports.
Video footage showed the man approaching President Sheinbaum from the side, wrapping his arm around her, and trying to kiss her. He then appeared to reach for her breasts before being swiftly pushed away by a security officer.
The man was immediately arrested, local newspaper El Universal reported. Prosecutors have since charged him with sexual harassment and sexual abuse.

The incident has sparked public concern over the president’s security arrangements, as the man was able to approach her with apparent ease. Like her predecessor Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Sheinbaum does not use the military unit traditionally assigned to protect Mexico’s president.
Reacting to the assault, Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada condemned the act, writing on X (formerly Twitter): “If they touch the president, they touch all of us. Today, when the president is harassed just for being a woman, we are all harassed.”
President Sheinbaum, 63, made history as Mexico’s first female president and has made women’s rights a central focus of her administration.
According to Mexico’s national statistics institute, nearly half of all women in the country have experienced sexual violence at least once — a reality Sheinbaum has pledged to confront through stronger protections and gender equality initiatives.
