Man City defeat rudderless Chelsea to kick off Premier League title defence
Manchester City began their Premier League title defence with a commanding 2-0 victory over a struggling Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Goals from Erling Haaland and Mateo Kovacic ensured a winning start for Pep Guardiola’s side, while Chelsea’s new manager, Enzo Maresca, endured a tough debut.
Haaland celebrated his 100th appearance for City with his 91st goal, converting from close range after a deflected cross from Bernardo Silva.
Kovacic doubled City’s lead with a stunning strike, though Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez could have done better to prevent the goal.
City’s dominance was evident despite missing key players like Rodri, Kyle Walker, John Stones, and Phil Foden, who were given extra recovery time following their Euro 2024 exertions.
Chelsea, on the other hand, are grappling with the challenge of integrating a bloated squad. Maresca, faced with difficult selection decisions, notably left out Raheem Sterling, sparking discontent from the player’s camp.

Additionally, none of Chelsea’s nine summer signings started the match, and Enzo Fernandez, despite recent controversy, was named captain.
The Blues struggled to create clear-cut chances, with their best opportunity thwarted when Nicolas Jackson was caught offside after Ederson spilled a shot from Cole Palmer.
City’s organisation and experience ultimately proved too much for Chelsea, highlighting the gap Maresca must bridge if his side is to challenge the champions this season.
