Maryam Bukar Hassan makes history as first Nigerian to carry Olympic flag
Nigerian poet and peace advocate Maryam Bukar Hassan has etched her name in history after becoming the first Nigerian to carry the Olympic flag at the 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony.
Hassan carried the iconic Olympic flag during the ceremony held at San Siro Stadium in Milan, in what organisers described as a symbolic moment celebrating peace, unity and global solidarity.
Selected as one of the official Flag Bearers of Peace, Hassan was honoured for her contributions to peacebuilding and social advocacy through spoken word poetry. The role is traditionally reserved for distinguished global figures whose work reflects the Olympic ideals beyond sports competition.

Popularly known by her artistic name Alhanislam, she has gained international recognition for using creative expression to promote dialogue, inclusion and conflict resolution.
