Massive explosion shakes Jos, sparks panic

Panic gripped the city of Jos on Tuesday morning following a powerful explosion that rattled the area, sending shockwaves through nearby communities.

Eyewitnesses stated that the blast occurred around 10:30 am close to the crowded Terminus market area. Early reports suggest multiple injuries, with some sources indicating that there may have been fatalities.

The full extent of the damage is still unknown, but witnesses described the scene as chaotic.

“I was nearby when I heard a loud bang,” said Gyang Buba, a clothes vendor who witnessed the incident. “I saw people running and screaming. It was terrifying.”

Emergency services, including the police, fire department, and ambulance teams, quickly responded to the scene to provide assistance.

However, in a press release signed by the command’s public relations officer, Alfred Alabo, the police have since clarified that the reported explosion was a false alarm, describing it as a bomb scare.

The police statement confirmed that authorities had received a report about a shallow hole suspected to contain an improvised explosive device (IED) along Murtala Mohammed Way, near the old JUTH fence, sparking panic among local residents.

“Upon receiving this report, Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adesina, promptly directed the Area Commander for the Metro Division and the Officer in Charge of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, along with the Anti-Bomb Squad, to deploy a team of bomb technicians to assess the situation. They were joined by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of ‘C’ Division,” the statement explained.

“Upon arrival, the area was cordoned off, and our EOD team conducted a thorough examination. After completing their assessment, they determined that the hole was safe and contained no explosive devices,” the police added.
