Military unmasks mastermind behind North-East suicide bombings, Maiduguri mosque attacks
The Nigerian military has identified and disclosed key details about the suspected mastermind behind a series of suicide bombings and mosque attacks in the North-East, particularly in Maiduguri, Borno State.
According to a statement released on Wednesday by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Chris Olukolade, intelligence and operational units of the Armed Forces have traced the planning and coordination of recent terror incidents to a high-ranking member of Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
The suspect, named Abu Musab al-Sudani (also known by his nom de guerre), is believed to have played a central role in orchestrating multiple explosive attacks targeting civilians and security installations across Borno and neighbouring states. Olukolade said al-Sudani’s network was responsible for recruiting and dispatching several suicide bombers to marketplaces, mosques, and checkpoints.

“The arrest and identification of Abu Musab al-Sudani represent a significant breakthrough in our counter-terrorism operations,” Maj-Gen Olukolade said. “We are committed to degrading and dismantling terrorist networks to protect innocent lives and restore peace to the North-East.”
Military sources added that tactical and human intelligence gathered over recent months helped track al-Sudani’s movements, leading to targeted operations that have so far resulted in the neutralisation or capture of several associated operatives.
Details on the exact location or circumstances of al-Sudani’s detention were not disclosed for security reasons. However, authorities said continued pressure will be maintained on insurgent cells and that cooperation with local communities has been critical to the successes achieved so far.

The disclosure comes as residents in Maiduguri and other parts of Borno State remain on alert following a spate of attacks in religious and commercial centres, which have heightened calls for strengthened security measures.
Security officials have reassured the public that operations will continue until terrorist networks are dismantled and accused individuals are brought to justice.
