“My husband stays away, sends me N50,000 for food” — Woman tells Court
A housewife, Rukayat Akibu, has approached the Area Court, Centre-Igboro, seeking a divorce from her husband, Hakeem, over claims of neglect and abandonment.
The six-year marriage, blessed with two children, has reportedly seen the petitioner spending most of the time in her mother’s house. Rukayat stated, “My husband has been perpetually absent from home, and I’ve had to live with my parents because of his neglect.”
She recounted that her mother-in-law had initiated the marriage proposal shortly after she finished secondary school. Despite her initial reluctance, promises of continuing her education in her husband’s house convinced her. However, she claimed this promise was never fulfilled.
“My husband’s official duties as a military officer have kept him away, but since August 2023, he has stopped picking my calls. He only sends N50,000 monthly for upkeep through his sister,” Rukayat revealed.
Efforts to mediate through her mother-in-law were unproductive, as she was allegedly warned by her son not to interfere in the couple’s matters.
Presiding Judge Hammad Ajumonbi advised the petitioner to exercise patience for the sake of the children but ordered the respondent to appear in court at the next sitting. The judge stated, “If the respondent fails to honour the invitation, the court will rule on the petitioner’s application.”
The case was adjourned for the respondent to state his side of the matter.
