N37.1 billion Fraud: Ex-Minister Sadiya Umar-Farouq distances self from engineer under probe

Former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouq, has distanced herself from any association with James Okwete, a contractor currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged money laundering amounting to N37.1 billion.

Taking to her official X handle and Instagram, Umar-Farouq refuted claims of knowing Okwete, asserting that he had no role or representation on her behalf.

Eager to avoid engaging in a media trial, she expressed her intention to consult her legal team to explore avenues for redress against what she deems a baseless and malicious attack on her character.

The former minister, who served as the pioneer head of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, emphasised her commitment to serving with integrity during her tenure.

As details of the EFCC investigation emerged, linking N37.1 billion transfers from government funds to various bank accounts associated with Okwete, Umar-Farouq vowed to defend her actions when necessary.

In her statement, Umar-Farouq assured the public, development partners, and friends that there was no crisis within the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) or its Secretariat, addressing inflammatory and misguided allegations from its former Director of Media and Public Affairs, Abdulrazaque Bello Barkindo.
