Nasarawa to prosecute parents who fail to enrol children in school
The Nasarawa State Government has warned that parents who fail to enrol their children in school will face prosecution, citing provisions of the state’s Child Rights Law, which mandates compulsory basic education for all children.
Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Kassim Mohammed Kassim, issued the warning during a media briefing in Lafia ahead of the Basic Education Summit themed “Revitalising the Future of Basic Education in Nasarawa State: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,” scheduled for December 4.
Kassim noted that the enforcement of the law has become necessary due to the growing population of out-of-school children in the state.

“Our statistics show that we have a high number of out-of-school children. Education must be free and compulsory for every child in Nasarawa State. Section 6 of our law makes this mandatory, and we will enforce it against any parent who fails to enrol their children,” he said.
He revealed that efforts are underway to address manpower shortages in the primary education sector. Already, 1,900 qualified teachers previously redeployed to local government offices have been returned to classrooms, while another 1,000 will soon be reassigned to strengthen staffing in public schools.
Kassim also highlighted ongoing partnerships with community leaders and stakeholders to enhance pupil safety and safeguard school infrastructure. He identified vandalism, teacher truancy, substandard projects, and diversion of instructional materials as persistent challenges affecting basic education.

To address furniture deficits in schools, he announced that Governor Abdullahi Sule has approved the procurement of 30,000 chairs and desks—an increase from the earlier 15,744 approved. The governor is expected to flag off their distribution during the summit.
Additionally, SUBEB has acquired seven minibuses to support statewide sensitisation campaigns on school enrolment.
