NCoS suspends Yobe officers over alleged inmate misconduct
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has suspended several officers accused of engaging in unprofessional conduct with inmates at a custodial centre in Yobe State.
According to a statement issued by the NCoS Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Corrections JN Osuji, the suspension takes immediate effect and will remain in place pending the conclusion of an ongoing investigation. The affected officers have also been issued formal queries to explain their alleged roles.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, approved the suspension after reviewing a preliminary investigation report. He reiterated that misconduct within any agency under the ministry would not be condoned, stressing the NCoS’s zero-tolerance stance on negligence, rights violations, or inappropriate staff–inmate relationships.

“Any officer found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary measures and possible legal sanctions in line with established regulations,” the minister stated.
The Controller-General of the NCoS, Sylvester Nwakuche, assured the public of the Service’s continued commitment to professionalism, integrity, and adherence to the rule of law. He added that all correctional facilities nationwide will maintain strict compliance with existing laws, ethical standards, and operational procedures.
