NEMA secures ₦120bn for 2025 flood response following presentation to NEC

The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, presented a comprehensive plan for flood preparedness and response at the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting on Thursday, July 31, 2025.

The meeting, chaired by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, led to the approval of significant intervention funds to support nationwide flood mitigation efforts.

During her presentation, Mrs. Umar provided an update on the current state of flood incidents across Nigeria. She detailed NEMA’s strategy, which includes ongoing risk assessments, early warning systems, and a coordinated response mechanism for the anticipated 2025 flood season.

Following her briefing and a discussion on the critical need for proactive measures, the NEC approved a total of ₦120 billion in intervention funds. The approved disbursements are as follows:

₦3 billion to each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

₦1.5 billion to the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning.

₦1.5 billion to the Federal Ministry of Environment.

₦1.5 billion to the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation.

₦10 billion to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

Mrs. Umar expressed her gratitude to the Vice President and the NEC members for the “timely and strategic intervention.” She pledged that NEMA would use the funds “efficiently, transparently, and accountably” to fulfill its mission of protecting lives and property during emergencies.

She also assured that NEMA will maintain close collaboration with state governments, relevant ministries, agencies, and other partners to ensure a “well-coordinated, timely, and people-centered flood response” throughout the country.
