Ngumoha’s rise at Liverpool fuels compensation row with Chelsea

Chelsea is demanding compensation from Liverpool for the transfer of teenage sensation Rio Ngumoha, with the Premier League yet to rule on the dispute almost a year after the move.

Ngumoha left Chelsea’s academy for Anfield last summer, and the transfer has been a source of tension between the two clubs ever since.

The 16-year-old recently underlined his immense talent by scoring a stoppage-time winner against Newcastle on Monday, making him the fourth-youngest goalscorer in Premier League history.

Chelsea has consistently argued that they lost a generational prospect and believe Ngumoha’s recent performances strengthen their case for a substantial fee. Their frustration has reportedly led them to ban Liverpool scouts from attending their academy matches.

In 2021, a tribunal ordered Liverpool to pay Fulham £4.3 million for Harvey Elliott, a precedent that Chelsea hopes will be followed in this case.

Ngumoha’s rapid progress has come as no surprise to those who watched him at Cobham, where he was named Player of the Tournament as the club’s U16s won the national title in 2023.

While the young player is now excelling in Liverpool’s first team, the unresolved compensation issue continues to hang over both clubs, with Chelsea pushing for a ruling that reflects the teenager’s rapid development.
