Nigeria braces for potential flood disaster as Cameroon prepares to open Lagdo Dam

In what could lead to a potential flood disaster for Nigeria, the Government of Cameroon has informed Nigeria’s federal government about its intention to open the Lagdo Dam on the Benue River.

This notification was conveyed through a letter signed by Umar Salisu, the Ministry’s Director of African Affairs in Cameroon.

The Cameroonian government has cited persistent rain as the reason behind their decision to open the Lagdo Dam, aimed at reducing the water levels.

The Ministry has urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to take immediate preventive measures and raise awareness among the affected areas to minimize damage.

Umar Salisu clarified that the Cameroonian authorities plan to release water gradually in small amounts to mitigate potential damages.

The letter stated, “I have the honour to inform that the Ministry is in receipt of a Note Verbale from the High Commission of the Republic of Cameroon. The note informs that the Cameroonian officials have resolved to open the floodgates of the Lagdo Dam on the Benue River due to heavy rainfall around the dam’s catchment area in Northern Cameroon.”

The note stressed the importance of releasing water in controlled, smaller amounts to avoid harm to both Cameroon and Nigeria along the River Benue basin.

It requested that NEMA take proactive steps to mitigate the damage and sensitize residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant and follow safety precautions.

The Ministry also reassured residents to stay calm and follow the instructions provided by the authorities.
