Nigeria condemns military coup in Guinea-Bissau
Nigeria has formally condemned the military coup that unfolded on Wednesday in Guinea-Bissau, describing it as a grave assault on democracy and a destabilising threat to West Africa.
In a statement issued Thursday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and signed by spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi, the Federal Government expressed “profound dismay and deep concern” over the unconstitutional takeover, insisting that the coup undermines democratic progress in the region.
The statement stressed that the coup violates the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which forbids non-constitutional seizure of power. Nigeria reaffirmed its support for the people of Guinea-Bissau, calling for the immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional order and protection of detained government officials.

Abuja also urged the military junta to guarantee the safety of election observers still in the country and warned that those responsible for the takeover will be held accountable for actions capable of plunging the nation into instability.
As a leading member of ECOWAS and the African Union, Nigeria pledged to work with regional and international partners to ensure a swift return to civilian governance, reaffirming its commitment to defending democracy and peace across the continent.
