Nigeria emerges fifth-best English-speaking country in Africa
Nigeria has been ranked the fifth-best English-speaking country in Africa in the 2025 Education First (EF) English Proficiency Index.
The report, published by global education organisation EF and cited by PUNCH Online, evaluated English language skills in 123 countries and regions, drawing on data from more than 2.2 million test takers worldwide. The 2025 edition marked a milestone by assessing speaking and writing skills for the first time, using artificial intelligence developed by EF’s education technology division.

English, Nigeria’s official language, plays a central role in the country’s education system, governance, media, and business sectors. This widespread usage has helped Nigeria sustain a strong level of English proficiency on the continent.
In the African rankings, Nigeria placed behind South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Zambia, which emerged as the top four countries. The findings highlight the growing importance of English as a vital tool for international communication, education, and global commerce.

Top 10 English-Speaking Countries in Africa (EF EPI):
1. South Africa – Extensive use across government, education, media, and business.
2. Zimbabwe – Primary language of instruction and administration.
3. Kenya – Official language alongside Swahili, widely used in urban and professional settings.
4. Zambia – Official language and main medium of instruction.
5. Nigeria – Official language, central to national communication and commerce.
6. Ghana – Used from basic to tertiary education and in public administration.
7. Uganda – Official language with a key role in trade, diplomacy, and professional environments.
8. Ethiopia – Widely used in education and international affairs, though not an official language.
9. Tunisia – Growing adoption among youths and professionals in education, technology, and tourism.
10. Morocco – Increasing use in schools and business to support global trade and relations.
