Museveni declared winner, extends four-decade rule in Uganda
Uganda’s long-serving president, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has been declared the winner of the country’s latest presidential election, extending his rule to nearly 40 years in power.
The announcement was made by the Uganda Electoral Commission, chaired by Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, which said Museveni secured a clear majority of the votes cast to win a fresh term in office. The victory marks Museveni’s seventh term since he first assumed power in 1986.

According to the official results, Museveni defeated his main challenger, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, leader of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP). Other candidates trailed behind in the tightly watched contest.
The election, however, has been greeted with controversy. Opposition parties alleged widespread irregularities, voter intimidation and restrictions on their activities, particularly in urban centres. Bobi Wine rejected the outcome, describing the process as flawed and unreflective of the will of the Ugandan people.
Security was tightened across Kampala and other major cities following the declaration, amid fears of possible protests. Rights groups and international observers also raised concerns over reports of an internet shutdown, arrests of opposition supporters and the heavy presence of security forces during the polls.

Museveni’s continued grip on power has been made possible by constitutional changes in recent years, including the removal of presidential term limits and age restrictions, reforms that allowed him to contest again despite his advanced age.
In his victory remarks, Museveni thanked Ugandans for their support and pledged to continue focusing on economic development, security and regional stability. He urged his opponents to seek redress through legal channels rather than the streets.
The development further cements Museveni’s status as one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, while reigniting debate over democracy, political succession and civil liberties in Uganda.
