Nominations for the 62nd Grammy Awards were announced at 2:30 pm, today.
The major award itself will be held on January 26, 2020, and it will be hosted by Alicia Keys. Nominees were led by Lizzo with eight nominations. She is followed by Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X with six nominations.
Burna Boy’s album, African Giant got nominated in the Best World Album category. He was nominated in the category alongside Altin Gün for Gece, Bokanté & Metropole Orkest Conducted by Jules Buckley for What Heat, Nathalie Joachim With Spektral Quartet for Fanm D’Ayiti, and Angelique Kidjo for Celia.
Following the announcement, other popular Nigerian celebrities including Don Jazzy, Wizkid, and Davido sent congratulatory tweets to Burna boy.
Burna Boy follows in the footsteps of Seun Kuti, Femi Kuti and King Sunny Ade in getting nominated in that category at the Grammy Awards. Other Nigerian Grammy nominees include Babatunde Olatunji, Wizkid, Timaya, and Kah Lo. The Recording Academy Grammy Awards is the most respected award every musician aspires to earn as evidence of their career rise.
Nigerians who have won Grammy Awards includes:
Sikiru Adepoju: A percussionist and recording artist, a master of the talking drum who primarily does traditional African music. He has won the Grammy award twice. Both awards were won in the Best Contemporary World Music Album category.
Sade Adu: Born Helen Folasade Adu on January 16, 1959, in Ibadan, Nigeria. Raised in London by her English mother, Sade developed several interests as a teen, including singing, fashion design, and modeling. She sang with a few local bands before signing with Epic Records and recording her first album, Diamond Life, in 1984. A huge hit in her native England, the album also had mass appeal across the pond thanks to such singles as “Smooth Operator.” In 1986, she won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
Seal: Sealhenry Olusegun Olumide Adeola Samuel was born in London, England, on February 19, 1963, of Nigerian heritage. Seal went on to score a major U.K. hit, “Killer,” before releasing his 1991 debut album. He’s become an internationally renowned singer/songwriter with albums like Human Being and hits like “Crazy,” “Prayer for the Dying” and “Kiss From a Rose,” which won multiple Grammy Awards.
Kelvin Olusola: Kelvin picked up an award alongside his acapella band, Pentatonix taking home the award in the ‘Arrangement, Instrumental or Acappella’ category for their medley ‘Daft Punk’, a remake of Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.
