Niger’s Coup: Civilians protest outside French Embassy

Following the military take over in Niger Republic on Wednesday 26th July,2023, protests erupt in the nation’s capital Niamey.

On Sunday 30th July,2023, thousands of pro-junta protesters were seen outside the French embassy in Niger’s capital Niamey.

It was gathered that the protest began after Paris suspended aid over a coup. Some protesters were seen trying to gain entry into the building.

Some angry demonstrators ripped off the plaque bearing the words “Embassy of France in Niger”, and stamped on it. Some protesters, hoisted the Nigerien and Russian flags, while others chanted “Long live Russia”, “Long live Putin” and “Down with France”.

World leaders have condemned the coup and called for order in Niger.

The AU and ECOWAS also despraise the coup, describing it as an ‘unpleasant development’.
