NiMet forecasts 3 days of heavy thunderstorms, rain

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a forecast for heavy thunderstorms and rain across Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday.

According to a post on its X handle, NiMet anticipates that morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall will affect parts of northern states, including Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina. By the afternoon, these conditions are expected to spread to Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba.

“Flash floods are possible in Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano States during this period,” the agency warned.

In central Nigeria, states like Niger, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, and Nasarawa will experience morning cloudiness and light to moderate rainfall, with a high risk of flooding in parts of Plateau.

In the south, light to moderate rains will fall over Ondo, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States.

NiMet’s forecast for Tuesday indicates sunny skies with patchy clouds in the north, but thunderstorms and rain will continue in Adamawa, Taraba, and their neighboring states. The central and southern regions will also continue to see moderate rainfall.

By Wednesday, northern states are expected to have sunny mornings with thunderstorms developing later in the day.

The central region will see cloudy skies and moderate rains, while southern states like Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River can expect morning showers and moderate to heavy afternoon rains.

Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to take precautions, activate emergency responses, and avoid driving during heavy rains.

NiMet also recommends securing loose objects, guarding against strong winds and low nighttime temperatures, disconnecting electrical appliances during storms, and avoiding shelter under tall trees.
