NLC threatens strike action, gives FG 7 days ultimatum to reverse policies
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has given the Federal Government a seven-day ultimatum to reverse what they perceive as anti-poor policies, including the recent increase in the pump price of petrol. Failure to meet these demands will result in an indefinite nationwide strike commencing on August 2.
In response to the government’s actions, the NLC has instructed all its affiliates and state councils to promptly begin mobilizing workers and collaborating with civil society allies to prepare for a sustained strike and mass protests if their demands are not met.
This decision was made during the NLC’s Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting on Tuesday, July 25, at Abuja Labour House. The NLC remains steadfast in their commitment to champion the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers.
“We urge the government to listen to the voices of the people and address these concerns promptly. The NLC will not hesitate to take necessary actions to protect the interests of the working class,” stated a representative of the NLC.
As the deadline approaches, the NLC hopes that the government will engage in meaningful dialogue to find a resolution that benefits all parties involved. The nationwide strike, should it occur, will undoubtedly have significant implications across various sectors of the Nigerian economy.
