NLC to meet as ultimatum to FG over ASUU strike expires

Story by Okafor Vivian

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is set to hold a crucial meeting today as the four-week ultimatum it issued to the Federal Government (FG) over unresolved demands from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) expires. The outcome of the meeting could determine whether the looming strike in the tertiary education sector is averted or escalates.

NLC President Joe Ajaero had given the government a month to resolve ASUU’s long-standing demands, including the full implementation of previous agreements, payment of owed academic allowances, and improvement of university infrastructure. He warned that failure to meet these demands would prompt coordinated industrial action across Nigeria’s education sector.

ASUU factions have expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s responses so far, insisting that the proposals offered do not meet the union’s requirements. The union had suspended a two-week warning strike earlier but stressed that a full-scale strike could resume unless all issues are addressed.

The NLC’s involvement reflects growing pressure on the government, as delays in addressing ASUU’s demands have continued to disrupt academic calendars and threaten the quality of tertiary education nationwide. Labour experts say that reallocating resources and ensuring prompt government action could help prevent further escalation.

Parents, students, and education stakeholders are closely monitoring today’s developments, fearing that any breakdown in negotiations could prolong academic disruptions across public universities.

The NLC has called on all parties to engage constructively and is expected to announce its next steps following the meeting later today.
