Northern Nigeria Beyond the Challenges: Nurturing the seedlings of hope, by Engr. Bello Gwarzo Abdullahi, FNSE
A new chapter is opening for Northern Nigeria. The 25th Anniversary of the Arewa Consultative Forum was more than a ceremonial gathering—it was a moment of renewal, reflection, and rediscovery. Leaders from politics, business, traditional institutions, academia, faith communities, and civil society assembled not just to recount the past, but to envision a future filled with possibility.
Amid the rich conversations, Dr Jibrin Ibrahim’s lecture, “Arewa in the Next 25 Years,” stood out for its clarity and courage. Yet beyond its realism, it carried something even more valuable: a framework of hope. It reminded us that every challenge confronting the North today holds within it the seed of a transformative opportunity.
This is not a time for despair. It is a time for collective awakening, guided by sober reflection and elevated by optimism grounded in evidence and experience.
Dr Jibrin’s analysis emphasised a timeless truth: regions that unite and plan with discipline always find their path to renewal. His call for a North driven by data, strategic foresight, and long-term vision is not a warning of doom, but an invitation to build a stronger, more resilient, and more prosperous region.
Our challenges—governance deficits, insecurity, demographic pressures, social inequality—are significant. But they are also catalysts for innovation, leadership reform, and institutional rebirth. Across the North today are countless stories of communities showing resilience, young people building businesses, traditional institutions strengthening social cohesion, and security collaborations producing real progress. These are the seedlings of hope quietly germinating beneath the noise.
Where others see only insecurity, we see communities organising to defend peace.
Where others lament poverty, we see untapped agricultural and entrepreneurial potential. Where others highlight educational gaps, we see a generation hungry to learn, adapt, and lead.
Our youthful population—often portrayed as a burden—is in fact our greatest comparative advantage. With the right investment in skills, values, and opportunities, Northern Nigeria can reinvent itself as the engine of Nigeria’s growth in agriculture, technology, creative industries, renewable energy, and human capital.
Dr Jibrin also underscored the need to return to principled, ethical, and visionary leadership. This call is fundamentally optimistic because it affirms that we already possess the cultural and moral foundations for institutional rebirth. Leadership rooted in integrity, service, and competence has defined our best moments in history—and can define our future again.

If our political, traditional, religious, and civic leaders speak with one voice, and if they mobilise our youth around shared responsibility and shared destiny, Northern Nigeria can rise to unprecedented heights. Unity is not only our heritage; it is our strategic asset.
History has shown that whenever the North stands together, it emerges stronger. Today, that same spirit of solidarity, once nurtured, can rebuild security, revitalise our economy, restore dignity, and knit communities back together.
Around the world, societies have converted crises into turning points. The North stands in a similar moment. Our task is not merely to survive the challenges before us, but to harness them as stepping stones toward renewal.
This is a hopeful moment because we know what works.
This is a promising era because we know what is possible.
This is a defining period because we dare to imagine a better future.

The crossroads is here—but so is the opportunity.
