NOUN VC mourns ex-director Prof Alhassan
The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) is reeling from the loss of Professor Muhtari Alhassan, the former Director of Management Information Systems (DMIS), who passed away in the early hours of Friday, March 21, 2024, following a brief illness. Vice-Chancellor Professor Olufemi Peters expressed deep sorrow over the demise, describing it as a significant blow to the academic community.
In a heartfelt condolence message penned by Peters himself, Alhassan was hailed as “a committed staff of the university,” with Peters highlighting his exemplary dedication and trustworthiness in his role. “He was very simple and unassuming. A credible confidant indeed,” Peters remarked.
Reflecting on Alhassan’s remarkable contributions, Peters reminisced about appointing him as the first Professor in the Department of Computer Science upon assuming office as Vice-Chancellor. Alhassan served as the foundational director of MIS from 2016 to 2023 and played a pivotal role in the university’s technological advancements.
Alhassan’s legacy at NOUN includes the design and implementation of the student portal, a vital system managing admissions, registrations, and exam scripts. Peters credited Alhassan with navigating the university through challenging times and commended his involvement in various committees and the selection of his successor at MIS.

“Muhtari was a good man, an almost perfect gentle and simple man. He died a simple man,” Peters expressed, concluding with a prayer for Alhassan’s eternal rest and strength for his bereaved family. “May God grant Muhtari Alhassan mercy and eternal rest and grant his family the fortitude to bear his loss also. I miss you Muhtari.”
