Dozens feared dead as terrorists launch deadly attacks in Niger and Kebbi State
Gunmen have reportedly killed at least 20 people in coordinated attacks across communities in Niger State and several others in Kebbi State, triggering fresh fears over insecurity in the region.
According to reports, the нападение in Niger occurred in Shiroro Local Government Area, where armed assailants operated for hours, destroying homes and overpowering local security efforts.
Residents said many villagers fled to nearby communities including Gwada, Zumba and Galadima Kogo in search of safety.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Niger State, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed that gunmen attacked Bagna and Erena villages on Tuesday. He stated that two community guards and a driver were killed, while several others sustained injuries.
In a related development, suspected bandits carried out similar attacks in parts of Kebbi State, reportedly killing dozens of residents and setting houses ablaze.
A local cleric said the нападения took place in Debbe and Shabanda, as well as surrounding communities.
The Kebbi State Police spokesperson, Bashir Usman, confirmed the incident but noted that casualty figures were still being verified.
“At about 2230 hours, suspected Mamudawa terrorist elements attacked the villages, resulting in loss of lives and destruction of property,” Usman said.
He added that police tactical teams from the Illo Division responded swiftly, intercepted the attackers, neutralised two suspects, and recovered items including a Niger Republic Army uniform and Immigration uniforms.
While urging calm, Usman said additional security personnel have been deployed to prevent further attacks, assuring residents that more details would be provided as investigations continue.
