OPay faces criticism following discovery of unauthorized account openings

Nigerian fintech firm OPay may find itself in hot water with both Nigerian consumers and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) as an increasing number of individuals are discovering that they have an account with the company, despite never having opened one.

The issue first surfaced on Monday on social media platform X and has seen many people confirming that they have an account with OPay, solely based on their mobile number.

OPay, a licensed mobile money operator in Nigeria, utilizes customers’ mobile numbers as their account numbers. However, it remains unclear how people are seeing their numbers appear as an OPay account without their permission or knowledge.

Nairmetrics put the claim to the test, using a phone number that had never been registered with OPay through a GTBank app and found our Analyst’s full name. A test transaction of N200 was even made to the account, which was successful. However, the location of the money remains unknown.

OPay may need to provide an explanation for this unsettling discovery, given its use as a major payment platform in Nigeria.
