PDP Govs ask Tinubu to review economic policies
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reassess the economic policies implemented by his administration, which they argue have significantly worsened the living conditions of Nigerians.
Meeting in Jos, Plateau State, the governors voiced their concerns over the fiscal and macroeconomic reforms enacted under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government. These include the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira, policies that have contributed to a surge in the cost of living.
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who chairs the forum, articulated their position:
_ “The forum empathises with Nigerians who are groaning under the oppressive economic hardship hoisted on the nation by the policies and decisions of the APC-led Federal Government. We call on the president to urgently review both macroeconomic and fiscal policies to address the welfare and well-being of Nigerians.”_
The PDP governors pledged to implement strategies that would alleviate the suffering of citizens in their respective states, focusing on development and progress.
_ “All PDP governors will continue to aggressively pursue policies and programmes that will reduce hardship and ensure progress and development,” Governor Mohammed added._
The forum also addressed the recent governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States, describing them as a “rape of democracy.” They accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of manipulating results in Edo State in favour of the APC candidate, despite the PDP candidate, Asue Ighodalo, allegedly winning the majority of lawful votes.
Similarly, they claimed that vote-buying and result manipulation marred the Ondo elections. They called on the judiciary to uphold democracy and urged the National Assembly to amend electoral laws to prevent such occurrences in the future.
_ “The forum calls on the judiciary to save Nigerian democracy and the National Assembly to strengthen electoral laws to make it difficult for institutional sabotage of the will of the people,” Governor Mohammed said._
Addressing the lingering leadership crisis within the PDP, the governors advocated for a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to be convened by February 2025. They stressed the importance of extensive consultations with party stakeholders to resolve internal disputes and foster unity.
The one-day meeting was attended by six PDP governors from Bauchi, Zamfara, Taraba, Adamawa, Oyo, and Plateau States. Delta and Enugu States sent their deputy governors, while the governors of Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Osun States were notably absent.
This meeting highlights the PDP governors’ determination to address both national and internal challenges, reaffirming their commitment to the welfare of Nigerians and the restoration of democratic integrity.
